Followspot
I yammered and yammed in an interview at this Portland theatre blog, followspot.com, but I assure you there's also useful and interesting posts about Portland's vibrant theatre scene. Be sure to check it out on Monday, when Grote gets grilled. You can read my grilling here.

A Little
Radio silence maintained at the moment. I actually have a lot to post about, but can't fight off the lack of entusiasm for my own loudmouthing. Apologies.

Meantime, here's a story scientifically designed to put a lump in your throat.

Sydney Shards
I met Hong Kong/Australian writer Lynda Ng at the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez, Alaska. She’s started publishing a new internet fiction project, Sydney Shards, and it looks good. Check out the first chapter here. She'll be publishing the next eleven installements ever Wednesday through July 4th.

Ugh.
The Virginia Tech massacre just took an uncomfortable turn.

UPDATE: What I mean is: when Woody Allen got involved with Sun Yi, people started saying that you could see his perversity in his movies, and therefore you could find the perversity of any artist in their work, and therefore artists are perverted and their work should be monitored for deviancy. I'm afraid of another round of that.

First Embedded Videos (Huzzah!)
In celebration of this technical milestone, let me introduce you to the rock goddess that is my wife, Julie, fronting her band of yore, Jerk Alert.

First, (I’m a) Werewolf, which is true:

Next, a cover of GG Allin and the Jabbers’ Don’t Talk to Me, with special guest vocals by Jimmy from Sweden. Video is after the intro.

Did I mention she married me? I want a time machine so I can go back in time and show these to my 13-yr. old self to let him know everything’s going to be ok.

(h/t Francisco Daum, who I think took the videos. Thanks!)

Blasphemy
You might have missed this news on the big websites. Some very bright bulbs disproved evolution. No really. There’s video (h/t Brian Flemming).

All I know is, when you misunderstand the nature of peanut butter and bananas, you misunderstand The King. And that I will not stand for.

Vandalism For Wimps
Something to take the edge off, next time you visit that political site that really sticks in your craw, or that theatre company that charges $25 to read your play:

Destroy a Site

and I just want you to know that I've installed a widget on Venal Scene that allows me to find out if you used it on this site, and gives me your name, address, and filthy habits.

Please welcome
(In possible lieu of a real post...I'm chasing a draft of a play...)

Alex Lewin, whose declaration of principles can be found here. "Eschew self-depracation?" C'mon, self-depracation is awesome, in combination with shameless boasting.

I am the handsomest playwright alive.

(h/t Isaac)

The Long and Winding Roll
Adding names to the list:

  1. Tim Bauer playwright of San Francisco. I spent the first six months of my life there. Legend has it that we lived a block down from Jefferson Airplane’s house. Interestingly, Tim has a review of Pillowman at Berkley Rep that runs exactly the opposite of

  2. Elizabeth Hunter Spreen, who wrote an open letter to the Rep (h/t Matt J). Yikes. I say she and Tim settle this through a game of Connect Four. Tim also pointed me to

  3. Scott McMorrow, who was in a reading of mine in Alaska. Actually, there’s a picture:

image courtesy Last Frontier Theatre Conference

Scott's on the right, along with (L to R) Richard Ranger, Alette Valencia, and Amanda Thomas. They all did a fine job. In spite of the fact that it was a reading. Which I don't care for.

  4. Ian W. Hill who has a lot to say on music (good) and cats (good, in that they eat fish).

Put A Song In
Lots to come today. Meanwhile please say hello to Adam Gwon. The introduction of another Adam will no doubt put off certain elements, but Mr. Gwon adds a wonderful new flavor to our theatre-weenie bouillabaise. One of the pleasures of my DG fellowship is the opportunity to watch musical theatre composers and lyricists at work. Their world is alien to me, and that's sort of lame, because music and theatre have gone together since those fellas sang about the blinded king. Adam does words AND notes, too. Fathom THAT. Get to know him by checking out his answer to the "5 things" meme.

These Are Two Links To Things That Are There
I got a call from my friend Adrienne in Portland at about 12:45 am last night. The phone rang twice, and then she realized that it was 12:45 am on the east coast, and then she hung up. That’s My Adrienne. But I knew what she wanted to tell me about: this article. It’s nice that Jingle Spree is getting more attention, and it’s nice to read that I sound just as pompous as I am. Keeps the universe in order.

Also, in spite of all good sense, I’m participating in National Playwrights Month, aka the not-at-all-awkward acronym NAPLWRIMO, to get a draft of a play out before the holidays. I’m not sure what the reward is, other than a draft of another friggin play. Maybe chocolate. I like chocolate.

Better keep a tight grasp on those bags tonight, kids.

A belated farwell to Spearbearer Down Left, who I'll miss in part because he provided perspective from somewhere besides my burg.

How I Love Cherry-Picked Emails
From Ny1.com, emails about the strike. Some of these are truly bizarre. Don't miss Hans in Queens.
